It looks like we won't be "letting the sun shine" in our living rooms, NBC has officially pulled the plug on the upcoming production of Hair Live !
The 60s rock musical was originally announced to air in May 19, 2019 in front of a live studio audience in celebration of Hair's 50th anniversary. The announcement of cancelling the production comes one week following Fox's presentation of Rent which brought in the lowest ratings for any live musical with only 3.4 million viewers.
"Live musicals are a part of this network's DNA, and we are committed to continuing that tradition," said NBC Co-Chairmen Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks in a statement. "Since these shows are such enormous undertakings, we need titles that have a wide appeal and we’re in the process of acquiring the rights to a couple of new shows."
The decision not to air Hair also comes after Robert Greenblatt, who revived live musicals at NBC, stepped down from his position as head of NBC Entertainment this past fall. Previoulsy, NBC has broadcasted The Sound of Music Live!, Peter Pan Live!, The Wiz Live!, and Hairspray Live!.
