Update: per The New York Times, Scott Rudin will be resigning from the Broadway League. In a written response Rudin stated he was “profoundly sorry for his behavior be revealed that he is resigning from the Broadway League, which is the trade association of producers and theater owners.” He went on to say “I know apologizing is not, by any means, enough. In stepping back, I intend to work on my issues and do so fully aware that many will feel that this is too little to late.”
In a statement provided to The New Times, producer Scott Rudin has announced that he will be stepping away from his Broadway productions, effective immediately. Due to the wake of ongoing allegations of abuse and intimidation, which was exposed by The Hollywood Reporter on April 7th, Rudin wrote "After a period of reflection, I've made the decision to step back from active participation of our Broadway productions, effective immediately. My roles will be filled by others from the Broadway community and in a number of cases, from the roster of participants already in place on those shows."
The announcement comes after members of the Broadway industry called for accountability after many remained silent regarding Rudin's behavior. Most notably were the major unions associated with Broadway that came forward and said harassments in the workplace would not be tolerated, without calling out Rudin by name. Many reflected that the ongoing silence was a true indication of the power that Rudin had held within the Broadway and entertainment industries, as Hollywood was also remained quiet on the abuse allegations. Actor Karen Olivo was seen as one of the first to protest the industry silence by saying she would not be returning to Moulin Rouge. Rudin's statement also went on to say, "Much has been written about my history of troubling interactions with colleagues, and I am profoundly sorry for the pain my behavior caused to individuals, directly and indirectly."
Rudin's current roster of Broadway productions (both current and upcoming) include: West Side Story, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Music Man, Our Town and The Book of Mormon as well as the current NY PopsUp which was designed to help Broadway and entertainment venues in NYC reemerge due to the ongoing pandemic.
