I am beyond thrilled and deeply moved to see everyone’s work on Stereophonic get recognized this morning. My own work included! It’s overwhelming. What a fun morning! My parents and aunts and uncles and cousins and friends and coworkers are also all over the moon. David wrote an extraordinary play, worth the extraordinary effort everyone has put into it. To get to walk into work and have the office be David Zinn’s beautiful set, perfectly lit by Jiyoun Chang; to get to obsess over Enver Chakartash’s costumes with the designer himself—I can’t get over it. To get to work day in day out with Justin Craig on orchestrating this extraordinary band; to have Ryan Rumery bring the work to life through the speakers; it’s been one of the great privileges of my life. And the actors! I’m so happy to see them get individual recognition, but also—what a true and beautiful ensemble. I’ve seen the play dozens of times now and I’m continually moved by their work. Eli Gelb and Will Brill do such thoughtful, precise—and hilarious!—emotional work. Also, I get to have Sarah Pidgeon and Tom Pecinka and Juliana Canfield sing songs I wrote—in beautiful harmony—eight times a week. It’s a dream. We’ve been working on this play for nearly a decade, and Daniel Aukin has been shepherding the process the whole time. His directoral goal was to keep the work alive by the time it hit the stage—and it’s alive! It’s overflowing with the beauty and banality and heartbreak and love of artistic life. I couldn’t be happier.

I was on a lunch break at Glyndebourne Opera in the UK where I am in technical rehearsals for the opera Carmen and sitting next to Diane Paulus, when my dear friend Neil Mazzella called me letting me know the news. It has been an amazing journey with Lempicka since its first production! I am so thankful to Rachel Chavkin and her daring vision!
