Professional skateboarder Tony Hawk is working with Anita Greenspan to produce a musical version of Nicholas Horby's 2007 novel Slam. It's aiming to hit Broadway in 2020-2021!
Slam follows a troubled 16-year-old skateboarder, Sam, who is surprised to find out his girlfriend Alicia is pregnant. Hawk is a featured character in this novel and is planning to develop skate choreography. The novel is set in London, but the creative team plans to reset the story in the United States.
This is not Hornby's first novel to be brought to the Broadway universe, his book High Fidelity was adopted into a musical that premiered in 2006. Mark Mothersbaugh, a film composer and co-founder of the band Devo, will be writing the music and lyrics for the musical. We can't wait to see the production of Slam unfold!
