Hadestown began previews on Broadway last Friday, March 22, but before the cast took the stage, they sat down and spoke about the production and their excitement to perform for New York audiences.
Anaïs Mitchell (Music, Lyrics, Book) began working on this show 12 years ago. The production has seen a lot of changes and different venues, and the cast and creatives are ecstatic that it has finally made its way to the Broadway stage.
Patrick Page (Hades) describes the music as "unlike you hear in most Broadway shows. Music with its roots in folk Americana, in jazz, and blues." Later he goes on to say, "Audiences will see a sexy, diverse cast. They are going to see astonishing performances from Broadway legends André De Sheilds, and new upcoming legends like Eva Noblezada and Reeve Carney and everything in between." The excitement around this production is unreal. It resonates extremely well with today's America and audiences of all sorts.
"Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers and singers, HADESTOWN is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go." - Hadestown Website.
