Florencia Cuenca First Mexican Immigrant To Originate Lead Role On Broadway

Florencia Cuenca, the rising star making her Broadway debut in the upcoming musical Real Women Have Curves, recently stopped by the iHeartRadio Broadway studio to talk about her groundbreaking journey, her love for musical theatre, and the joy of bringing Estela Garcia to life on stage.

The visit comes just weeks before Real Women Have Curves officially opens on April 27th at the James Earl Jones Theatre. The musical, based on the beloved 2002 film starring America Ferrera, began previews on April 1st and has already begun to generate buzz for its heart, humor, and powerful storytelling.

When the curtain rises on opening night, Florencia will make history as the first Mexican immigrant to originate a co-leading role in a Broadway musical—a moment she described during her iHeartRadio chat as “an honor, a responsibility, and a dream come true.”

Florencia plays Estela Garcia, a strong and passionate young woman who runs a sewing factory in East LA and dreams of building a fashion empire. It’s a role she knows intimately, having originated it in the world premiere production at the American Repertory Theater in December 2023.

Back home in Mexico, Florencia is a familiar face thanks to her work in hit telenovelas and acclaimed musicals such as Si Nos Dejan, Shrek the Musical (Mexico premiere), and Selena the Musical. In the U.S., she’s made her mark with performances in Off-Broadway productions like A Never-Ending Line and Children of Salt, and with her bilingual cabaret Broadway en Spanglish, which reimagines classic show tunes with a cross-cultural twist.

Catch Florencia Cuenca in Real Women Have Curves now in previews, and don’t miss opening night on April 27th—a historic performance in more ways than one. Watch our interview in the video player above!
